New guidance on rape linked to murder cases

08.07.12 | News

The Crown Prosecution Service has issued new guidance to prosecutors on the issue of whether charges of rape should be pressed when they are linked to a murder.
There has been a campaign after the case of Jane Clough. She was murdered by her ex-partner two years ago. He was facing the charge of raping her when the murder occurred. But once he had been convicted of murder, the rape charge did not proceed and were left on file. That has left a feeling of injustice that an alleged rape against Jane was never treated as a crime in court.
Keir Starmer, the director of public prosecutions in England and Wales, explains what the new guidance is.
