Therapeutic Support

Survivors Manchester believes that by being in contact with people who understand the issues that male survivors face can really begin to help an individual move forward in their life and take back the power and control that was once taken away.

In all of our services, we work on a stepped-care model that allows individuals to increase or decrease the intensity of support; and like many trauma focused support services, we work in a way that is very much in keeping with Judith Herman’s model of Trauma and Recovery.

The model she presents describes in detail the healing process of people who struggle with a combination of problems related to unwanted, abusive, or traumatic experiences in their past. Our friends over at 1in6 in the USA have described the three stage model perfectly which you can see by clicking here.

Our therapeutic services or talking therapy services are there for you to be able to work with a qualified and experienced trauma-informed therapist to process the impact of your experiences. All of our therapists adhere to the BACP ethical framework for the Counselling Professions¬†and we are an organisational member ourselves. There isn’t a right or wrong way to ‘do’ therapy, think of it more as a safe space for you to do things like unpack the memories, explore the impact, work through the feelings or emotions, or maybe work out the facts, its whatever is right for you.

Whilst your therapist has lots of experience and an expertise of working with male survivors, they are not the experts on you. You are the expert there and its your therapists role to support you to develop a plan and way of being that is best for you, you are in control of the direction of travel in that room – sometimes with a guiding hand from them. Everything happens at your pace and in your time.

Everyone engaging in counselling / psychotherapy will first get an assessment with the aim of trying to work out what best fits for them and the goals they want to achieve.

To help you begin thinking about what support is best for you, we have provided you with a breakdown of each therapeutic service below.

Healing Steps

Our ‘Healing Steps’ service enables individuals to meet on a one-to-one basis with one of our team and work through some issues, learn some skills and set some goals to better living.

Break the Silence Counselling/Psychotherapy

Our ‘Break the Silence’ therapy service provides individuals with qualified therapists, delivering evidence based therapy that aims to help create significant change and improve the mental health of clients.

Break The Silence

(Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing)

As part of our overall counselling and psychotherapy offer, we can provide EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing) as either part of the therapy or as a separate treatment for those with PTSD.
